What’s in your Garden?

Listen! A farmer went out to plant some seeds. As he scattered them across his field…other seeds fell among thorns (weeds) that grew up and choked out the tender plants…(these represent)…those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced.” Matthew 13:3, 7, 22 NLT

We’re going to jump right in today and talk about WEEDS!

Laugh for a second, its okay, because you probably weren’t expecting such a term as ‘weeds.’ I know.

We’re walking through Jesus’ parable about the Farmer Scattering Seed from Matthew 13 and how it relates to our lives as single women.  If you’re just joining us, definitely go back and read the others too!

But the third type of soil the seed falls on, is planted into and grows from is full of WEEDS! But further on in Matthew 13:24-30 & 36-43, Jesus tells us another parable that gives us some insight into these weeds and then explains it. He very clearly tells us that weeds are planted by the enemy and they cause sin by those who do evil.

Here’s some interesting info on weeds from Teleflora.blog  Weeds vs. Flowers: What’s the Difference? July 31, 2014.

THE DIFFERENCE / The difference between a flower and a weed might be nothing more than whether or not the plant is wanted in the garden.

WEEDS / Weeds often spread quickly, but may not cause a threat to native plants.

INVASIVE WEEDS / All invasive plants are weeds. They quickly spread, dominate and harm native species of plants. They are hard to kill because they grow rapidly, produce many seeds, disperse seeds over a wide area, have a lack of natural predators, and germinate quickly.

FLOWERING WEEDS / Some weeds flower as well, though they might not make a difference to the overall appearance of the garden, they can take resources away from your other plants.

HEALTH / Eliminating all weeds from your garden is the best way to make sure your desired plant life stays healthy. Weeds are often a sign that something is wrong in the soil. Use the weeds in your garden to identify any problems in the soil. Your garden may just need to be fertilized.

PREVENTION / The best method for preventing weeds is maintain a dense and healthy lawn. Make sure to properly take care of your soil to keep away these pesky plants.

Okay, I feel like we just heard a sermon! So I’m going to do a little word replacement, from the same content, but changing it to the context of our relationship with God, our hearts, and the sin/distraction issue.

THE DIFFERENCE / The difference between something good or a distraction might be nothing more than whether or not that person/thing/hobby is wanted in your relationship with God and if it comes between you and Him.

Is there something in my life that is coming between me and my relationship with God?

Ask: God, what are the weeds in my life that I thought were just flowers.  God, what are the flowers in my life and help me to grow in maturity for things to have their proper place in my walk with You.

WEEDS / Distractions often spread quickly, but may not cause a threat to areas of maturity in your relationship with God.

What am I choosing over growth? Am I leaving devotional time to when it often gets pushed back or forgotten about? Am I pursuing a relationship with a dude over a relationship with God?

Ask: God, show me what these distractions are robbing from my walk with you.

INVASIVE WEEDS / All invasive distractions are sin. Sin quickly spreads, dominates and harms even areas of maturity. They are hard to kill because they grow rapidly, produce many seeds, disperse seeds over other areas of your life, have a lack of truth to exterminate it, and reproduces more sin quickly.

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.” Colossians 3:5-6

Deal with sin by Godly sorrow which leads to repentance. 2 Corinthians 7:9-11
More scriptures on the topic: Acts 3:19, James 4:4, 1 John 2:15, Psalm 119:25-29

Ask: God, I repent from _____________________. I was wrong and by this I broke relationship between me and You. I ask that you forgive me, wash me and set me free.

FLOWERING WEEDS / Some distractions flower as well, though they might not make a difference to the overall relationship with God, they can take resources away from His purpose in your life.

Ask: God, is there anything in my life that is taking resources from Your purpose for my life?

HEALTH / Eliminating all sin and distractions from your heart is the best way to make sure your life in Christ stays healthy.

Sin and distraction are often a sign that something is wrong in your heart. Use these distractions from your relationship with God to identify any problems in your heart. Your intimacy with God may just need to be fed (Word, Prayer, Worship, Devotion).

PREVENTION / The best method for preventing sin is maintain a full and healthy walk with God. Make sure to properly take care of your heart to keep away these pesky distractions that lead to sin.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Luke 10:27 NLT

Oh my heavens, was that not amazing! God is so smart, that even things in the natural support His spiritual truths! He did create both… (smile)

I hope that spoke to you. I hope it revealed some distractions and even some sin that maybe you didn’t realize was there! We’re in this together and sometimes we just need reminding to do some gardening in our hearts.

In closing, here’s the verse we’re digging into for a little while:

In the same way you received Jesus our Lord and Messiah by faith, continue your journey of faith, progressing further into your union with him! Colossians 2:6 PASSION

Today, progress further into your union (relationship) with Christ. Keep the soil of your heart rich in Him who loves you more than you could ever imagine!

In this with you girl,

Shelley
